MEANING AND SUBJECT MATTER- Essay Writing

 A. Meaning:

An Essay is regular and connected writing on any subject. It may be a narration of some individual, description of some substance, some creature, building, plant or some topic or abstract qualities, such as good manners‘, Friendship‘, ‘discipline‘, etc.

The average reader should remember that no hard and fast rules can be laid down for Essay-Writing. It is an art that can be acquired only by regular and constant practice. What is needed most is earnest preparation.

This preparation for writing essays involves two processes – reading and writing. The habit of reading and writing will enable the student to possess a good store of ideas and words. In the absence of a good working vocabulary, it is not possible to dress ideas in their proper garb.

The next important habit, which a student must form, is the right observation of things, events, and happenings and accurate and concise thinking. This is not all. He must also study good models, and standard writers in order to acquire perfect mastery over idioms, usages, and forms of expression.

But when all this is said, he must keep in mind that no amount of memorizing and reading will help him, if he does not practice regularly.

In simple and plain words, an essay is an attempt at giving expression to one’s thoughts on a given subject. Two things are absolutely essential in an essay-the matter and expression, and for a beginner, the expression is more important of the two.

 B.  Collection of Material

You cannot write a composition of any kind unless you have the material and resources. To collect the material and resources is most essential. You should begin by writing down, in the form of notes, all your ideas on the given topic. You can get such ideas by putting to yourself a number of questions about the subject.

When you have put down all your ideas, your next task is to take stock of them. Leave out those that are not important, but take care that none of your ideas are repeated.

C.  Arrangement of Material:

The next step is to arrange your ideas under various headings in proper sequence and order. You must look carefully through the facts. And make up your mind as to what are to be four/five main divisions of your subject, and write down headings accordingly. Each and every individual division will form a paragraph of the subject matter.

D. Outline:

Before attempting to write an essay, you should frame a brief outline of the main heads under which you will arrange your ideas. It should be revised and improved upon.

Some of the facts that appear unnecessary should be crossed out and new facts that occur to you may be inserted. Take care that each idea really belongs to the head under which it is put.

E. Paragraphs:

Divide your essay into well-defined paragraphs. An essay that is not split up into a few well-defined paragraphs looks jumbled up and unattractive. Various paragraphs should be of unequal length.

But they should be related to one another according to your set plan, each one having a definite, central thought. Keep to your point and see that each detail appears in its right place.

F. Revision:

The last step in essay-writing is revision. While revising the essay, write out illegible words again clearly, supply omitted words, correct ungrammatical sentences, and mind punctuation and spellings.

Notes :

(i) The outline of the essay should not appear in the essay.
(ii) Paragraphs should not be numbered.

       2. The Body:

The body of the essay is the important and main part of the essay. The body of any content should contain the necessary and important facts that should give the proper point of a given subject.

The content should follow the outline of the subject matter. The writing should be a focus on the subject matter and should be well- construct for readers. Do not jump from point to point without showing the connection of the one with the other. Keep to the point.

      3. Conclusion:

The ending, like the beginning, should be brief and striking. It should be natural and not abrupt.
